Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)

Common Milkweed is a wildlife-friendly perennial. Rounded clusters of fragrant, pinkish-purple flowers bloom June to August. It grows 3' to 4' tall and grows well in poor, dry soils. It spreads easily and is best used in wildlife gardens, meadows, and other naturalized areas. The nectar is an important food source for butterflies, native bees, bumblebees, and honeybees. Common Milkweed is the host plant for Monarch butterflies. The plant has long been used in natural remedies including removing warts with a topical treatment made from the milky white sap and chewing the roots to cure dysentery.
