Nandi is the name of the bull in Hindu mythology which serves as the mount of the god Shiva. The Sanskrit word "Nandi" translates as Happy, Joyous or Happy Person, and the Tamil word "Pandi," means bull. Ancient Tamils considered the bull as a sign of masculinity and valor and to this day in India Nandi represents the hope of fertility for men and women and serves as a symbol of prosperity. Nandi was used for several years as the official emblem of the Society for Theriogenology and the American College of Theriogenologists. This stone Nandi statue with sandalwood paste on the forehead is from the Nandi temple in Mysore, India. The statue measures approximately 3" x 3" x 2". The bull was originally donated by Dr. Arun Phatak, Dipl. American College of Theriogenologists in recognition of the key role of bull and cow fertility in bovine practice. The bull is being re-donated by Dr. Jim Floyd, Dipl. American College of Theriogenologists, former chair of the Amstutz Committee, who began the Amstutz auction as a fundraiser for the scholarship.
