This piece came from a black walnut grove that once flourished behind Drown Avenue in Ojai. While most of the trees are long gone, some remnants like this beautifully figured burl remain. "This piece is meant to highlight the best part of working with wood; the unknown that comes from opening a down tree and seeing what's inside," said Assistant Head of School Mike Mahon, who crafted this piece, which can be used as a vase, candle holder, or as a decorative mantlepiece. "It was twice turned while semi-green giving it a living characteristic," Mahon said. "The bottom half is smooth, polished, and symmetrical, while the top half has been allowed to dry slowly, creating a natural wilting effect and a pleasing loss of symmetry. I hope you enjoy seeing this piece find its final shape over the months to come." ($80 value).
