War Hole VIII

Ivan Navarro (b. 1972, Santiago, Chile) is known internationally for his sociopolitically charged sculptures of neon and fluorescent light. The sculptures and installations of Iván Navarro grow out of the legacy of minimalism and modern design, but they subvert the cool detachment of their forms with pointed sociopolitical critique. Navarro grew up under Pinochet's brutal military dictatorship. In order to better understand this dark history, Navarro uses light-a symbol of hope and truth-as his medium, constructing chairs, ladders, doors, and even shopping carts out of neon and fluorescent lights. With their ambient glow and live current, the works are equally seductive and unnerving.

Antonio Obá (b. 1983, Ceilandia) investigates the influence and contradictions within the cultural construction of Brazil, giving rise to an act of resistance and reflection on the idea of national identity. Obá utilizes icons present in Brazilian culture as allusions to racial and political identity, these iconic historical and sometimes religious subjects are explored within his sculpture, painting, installations, and performance. Obá's own body is central to his research, questioning the eroticization of the black male body and construction of his own identity. Antonio Obá lives and works in Brasília.

Windswept Palms at Dusk

Alec Egan (b. 1984, Los Angeles, CA) is a Los Angeles based painter. His thick impastoed figurative paintings are strikingly banal interior scenes. The interior spaces his paintings depict are premised on a fictitious memory- willfully playing on tropes of nostalgia. There are moments of clarity in the messy compositions. Particular objects begin to stick out and become repeated across his various canvases. This repetition allows the items to garner their own strength and intensity, despite their mundane status. A pair of socks or plants on a windowsill are distilled into something melancholic and profound. Egan recently had his first solo exhibition in Asia-Miro's Corner-at MAKI Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.

Over the years, his sculpture has evolved from an early exploration of minimal "primary structures" to an intensive exploration of the legacy of Cubist construction. In the last decade, Steiner has produced some of his most original, challenging works: A series of increasingly transparent, complex structures in steel, that most recently, posed fascinating questions about the relationship between space and solids, about the tension between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional and about our perceptions of repetition and symmetry, to name but a few. The Katonah Museum of Art presented an exhibition of Steiner's sculptures in 2006 in the Marilyn M. Simpson Sculpture Garden.

They have become internationally known for their beaded beasts, innovative ceramics, and other fantastical works of art. While their artistic practice has always been rooted in drawing, their drawings have never been released to the public and are not available, with the exception of this work given to the Katonah Museum of Art via Board Trustee Thomas Rom, a collaborator and friend of the artists. The work at auction, "Wave, 2016" displays the humor and unique imagination that typifies their work in a wide variety of media. Their work may be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art among others. Their work will exhibited for the first time with masterworks dating from the 16th century to the present at the Katonah Museum of Art in Constant Carnival: The Haas Brothers in Context, on view March 13 - June 26, 2022.

Rifkin takes us on a tour of a day-to-day America that changes almost in real-time, one that we have rarely seen. From the 1970s to the present day, Rifkin shows us an America of astounding purity. His inhabitants are photographed as so many actors in a silent musical, filmed in black and white. Rifkin tells us the story of his own America, a peaceful America. Yet this appearance of supreme gentleness owes as much to the quality of his prints as to their subjects. It is impossible to imagine Rifkin's photos printed by anyone other than himself. They have the softness and mystery of sketches, so much so that one wonders whether they are prints or drawings. So, it is hardly surprising to learn that Rifkin is also the official printer for several major photographers. Steven J Rifkin's photographs have been exhibited at museums and galleries, as well as being part of permanent collections.
