HELP US TELL THIS IMPORTANT STORY

The Hutchinson House

The c. 1885 Hutchinson House, is one of the oldest surviving homes built by an African American family during the Reconstruction Era on Edisto Island and the Edisto Island Open Land Trust is working to bring it back to life.

Jim Hutchinson and a consortium of friends and family purchased 404 acres of the old Clark Plantation in 1875 and began the African American settlement community, referred to as the Clark Community, on Point of Pines Road. His son Henry Hutchinson built his home there, the c. 1885 Hutchinson House, and today it stands as the last remaining home of the original Clark Community.

Edisto Island Open Land Trust Plan and Progress

The Edisto Island Open Land Trust (EIOLT) purchased the Hutchinson House in 2016 with the vision to restore it to its c.1885 appearance and open it to the public as a place of learning. Over the course of the last ten years, it has taken heroic measures to preserve and restore the home. We are proud to announce that through your dedication to this project, the project received two prestigious Carolopolis awards for interior and exterior preservation work!

We are now in the final stretch, working to finish the needed infrastructure requirements needed to open to the public; a permanent parking area, visitor restroom facilities, and exterior lighting.  We hope you consider a contribution to help us open the Hutchinson House to the public.

Interior Work

Your support has accomplished so much and the restoration is complete. The historic interiors are painted with historically accurate linseed oil paint in the original colors, we refurbished the surviving original rim locks, and installed matching replica doorknobs and hinges. The museum interpretation is in the final stages and we are excited to welcome visitors to the property soon!

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Hutchinson House project and dedication to preserving the landmark of Edisto Island.
