0This piece, Untitled, 2016 is a relief cast in plaster by WSU Professor of Art, Stefan Chinov. It is an abstract wall piece with references to the Constructivist and Minimalist sculpture movements of the early and mid-20th century. The piece was first cast in a rubber mold taken from a clay original. It was altered, sanded, polished, and finished with casein, a milk based emulsion traditionally used since ancient times, which penetrates and seals the surface (casein is what gives it a distinctive off-white tone).
As in constructivists and minimalist works, the piece's form is an integral part of its meaning. Its physical characteristics and its actual presence are the qualities that determine not only its formal identity, but also its value.
