Deception Island is a small island and harbor that is also a caldera of an active volcano in the South Shetland Islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. It served as a whaling station in the early 1800s through to the early 1900s.. For us it was one of the last stops of our Antarctic adventure. Moj's one woman show links the exploitation of people, through slavery, with the exploitation of the planet and its creatures, using climate change and extinction as literal metaphors. This ancient wooden boat evokes the middle passage where thousands of Africans lost their lives. Although the temperature was minus 10C, after a few shots Moj would jump into the pool we dug in the black sand, filled with warm waters as the magma lurking just under our feet heated the icy waters.
