About this Piece:

Interior I is part of a larger series depicting personal objects within interiors inspired by the isolation of quarantine during the pandemic. I often use house plants as a stand-in for the figure, implying a human presence without including a literal representation of a person. The distortion of space is also a common theme in my work; though the objects represented are easily recognizable, the space itself is not necessarily realistic, giving the piece a surreal or even unsettling feeling. The use of "interior" in the title references both the literal interior of a living space as well as the interior emotional life of the space's occupant. And the book on the table-Ninth Street Women, which tells the story of five oft-overlooked female artists who helped shape New York's art scene in the mid-twentieth century-serves as a reminder of art history and context for the work of women painters.
