2012 Pisoni Pinot Noir Estate - rating 96

Probably the wine of the vintage from the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2012 Pinot Noir Estate comes all from the granite soils of the Pisoni Estate vineyard, which is located in the southern end (which means the fog clears off earlier and warmer temps) of the appellation. It offers rocking aromas and flavors of crème de cassis and black raspberry fruit, big minerality, spring flowers, and forest floor to go with a full-bodied, structured, and classy feel on the palate. While it's hard to resist now, it has the depth, richness, and tannic structure to evolve nicely through 2022. - issue date Oct 30 2014

2000 Léoville Poyferré - rating 97

The plushest, most ostentatious and dramatic of all the Leovilles in 2000, this wine is already sumptuous, displaying some nuances in its huge nose of vanilla bean, black chocolate, jammy black cherries, cassis, and graphite in a flamboyant style. Opulent, savory, rich, and full bodied, it is a head turning, prodigious wine and a complete contrast to the extracted behemoth of Leoville Barton and the backward, classic Leoville Las Cases. The Poyferre's low acidity, sweet tannin, and already gorgeous mouthfeel make it a wine to drink now as well as over the next 25 years or more. - issue date June 28 2010

2007 Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape - rating 93

One of the finest Chateauneuf du Papes made from this iconic estate is easily the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. Checking in as a blend of 80% old vine Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties, it offers full bodied, Provencal, incredibly perfumed notes of lavender, garrigue, bloody meat, licorice, and sweet Grenache fruit. Pure, polished, and layered on the palate, with ultra fine tannin, it's drinking at point today yet has another decade or more of life. - issue date Feb 28 2017

2015 Shafer Vineyards Relentless - rating 96+

Blended of 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, is deep purple-black colored 2015 Relentless has a total rock-star nose with flamboyant blackberry pie, plum preserves, mulberries and licorice scents with hints of Sichuan pepper, hoisin, Indian spices and smoked meats, plus a waft of raspberry leaves. Very big, rich, full and decadently fruited mouth, the palate packs in black fruits and exotic spice layers with a firm, rounded tannin frame and just enough freshness to carry off the long, opulent finish. - issue date Oct 29 2018

2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste - rating 92

Pure crème de cassis, licorice, and spice are all present in this wine from Xavier Borie. Medium to full-bodied and ripe, with sweet tannin and a nicely textured mouthfeel, this is a beauty that should continue to drink well for another 15 years or so. - issue date June 28 2018

2012 Hall Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall - rating 97

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall is largely sourced from their Sacrashe Vineyard. Lots of blueberry and black raspberry fruit with a hint of mocha and background oak are all present in this full-bodied, opulent, absolutely spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a long distance runner, although not so much because of its tannic structure, but because the fruit seems younger and more primary than some of its siblings. Nevertheless, it is loaded with potential promise, and as Kathryn Hall says so frequently, "Magic." This full-bodied, classic Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa should hit its prime in 4-5 years and last at least two decades or more. - issue date Oct 30 2014
