Beautifully handcrafted wooden jewelry box.

"I have been an amateur woodworker for 50+ years and have made many items of furniture in my home, as well as for friends and other family members. Several years ago, I started making small stools held together by dowels of various sizes, as well as jewelry boxes.

The box that I donated was made in 2015 and for a short time, I used it myself. However, I have continued to make new boxes and this box has sat unused, waiting for a new owner.

The top for this box is made from cherry and has not been stained with the usual red tint that most people associate with cherry wood. Instead, it has taken on a sepia tone that is more typical of natural cherry over time. The insert in the top of the box lid is poplar, a soft wood that most often has a light tan coloring. However, I had several pieces with green heartwood that I used to make the box lid, which over the time will change color from green to brown. The base of the box is made from what I believe is a type of rosewood. However, as this wood was given to me by a fellow woodworker, I am not able to give you a better identification of this wood. Note that it has a slight odor and, in contrast to cherry and poplar, is quite hard. The drawers are made from maple and the drawer bottoms are oak veneer plywood that I happened to have on hand.

Care of this box is relatively simple. Don't leave in direct sun light (the wood colors will fade) and clean it periodically, using a dry or slightly damp rag. Occasional applications of orange oil or beeswax is also recommended."
