This is a print of Aaron Douglas (1899-1979), who was a painter, illustrator and visual arts educator. He was a major figure in New York City in the 1920s and later founded the Fine Art Department at Fisk University in Nashville. He developed his art career painting murals and creating illustrations that addressed social issues around race and segregation in the United States by utilizing African-centric imagery.

The artist is Nashville native Dan H. Brawner, who is also an educator and illustrator for clients including Children's TV Workshop, Coca-Cola, Flannery O'Connor Review, and Simon & Schuster. His work has been juried into numerous industry competitions and museum exhibitions, including American Illustration, Frist Art Museum, Graphis Design Annual 2020, Graphis Design Annual 2021, Huntsville Museum of Art, Society of Illustrators: The Museum of Illustration, Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, PRINT, and El Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca. His limited-edition books and sketchbooks are in the collections of Stanford University and Vanderbilt University. Mr. Brawner is a Professor of Practice in the Watkins College of Design, Belmont University.

The piece is an artist proof 16" x 20", edition of 5, letterpress, hand-printed, framed and signed. The original work is in the permanent collection of the Noelle Hotel. Framing for the print was donated by the Rare Prints Gallery in downtown Franklin.
