Sam Kilgore, the Native Plant Specialist and Land Stewardship Manager at The Conservation Foundation, is leading a mid-late summer remnant prairie walk. Prairies used to dominate the landscape of Illinois, covering some 22 million acres or 60% of the land area in The Prairie State, but today, only about 2,500 acres remain, less than 0.01% of the original habitat. Remnant prairies are rare gems, relics of an ecosystem nearly lost to land use change. This walk, taking place at a state renowned remnant prairie, will showcase some of the factors that make remnant prairies unique as well as highlight some of the plant species that call prairies home. 2-3 hour walk for up to 5 people.
