Bear Tower Picnic: The Ultimate Event for Fans of Black Bears

The Bear Yards are home to the Center's Black Bear patients - a wild space for them to grow, explore, and learn the skills they'll need for life in the wild. When the Bear Yards are "occupied", these spaces - about 1. 5 acres -- are strictly off-limits to anyone other than the bear-care team.

Among the features of the Bear Yards are two towers - each about 27 feet tall. These towers provide storage space, a platform for observing the bears and tossing grub into the yards, and a host spot for Critter Cam cameras.

Yearling bears are generally released back into the wild in April; the next season's cubs are usually not quite big enough to go up into the yards until August. For about 100 days each year, the Bear Yards are bear-free and "vacant" ... and accessible to Center staff and construction crews that are needed to repair the damage done by the last "class" of bears.
