In addition to being an Assistant Professor of Classical Languages, Fr. Albert Trudel, O.P., does calligraphy and illumination. He is creating this lovely piece, unframed and measuring 10 1/4" (26 cm) x 11 1/8" (36 cm), just for this auction. The watercolor paper used is Aquarelle Arches hot pressed, 100% cotton paper, 140 lb/sq. meter. The ink used is oak gall ink, from a recipe used by scribes from Roman times until the end of the 19th century. The colors will be provided from goache watercolors, which dries opaque. The image of Christ in glory with the symbols of the four evangelists is taken from the Westminster Psalter, ca. 1200, now in the British Library in London, MS Royal 2 A XXII (the image being reproduced in this illumination is on fol. 14 recto). This psalter is the oldest surviving psalter used at Westminster Abbey, and is presumed to have left Westminster after the dissolution of the monasteries. Father Trudel adds, "My painting skills are nowhere near the illuminator of this manuscript, so caveat emptor (let the buyer beware)!"

The text underneath is taken from the Introit for Easter Sunday: "I have risen, and I am yet with you, Alleluia: you have placed your hand upon me, Alleluia; your knowledge has become marvellous, Alleluia, Alleluia." The text is in a late Carolingian script, which is similar to the text which appears in the psalter.
