'Immigrant New York' Walking Tour: Valued at $500
The City of New York has welcomed immigrants from throughout the world for centuries. On this one and a half walking tour for up to 15 people, 'Immigrant New York,' get the chance to explore the experiences of the different immigrant and ethnic populations residing in the Lower East Side from the early 19th century through today. Enjoy this experience with WEDS parent, Rebecca Kobrin. She is the Russell and Bettina Knapp Associate Professor of American Jewish History at Columbia University where she works in the fields of immigration history, urban studies and American Jewish History; specializing in modern Jewish migration.
You'll walk through Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Jewish Lower East Side. You will "peel away the layers of history" while discussing tenement, pushcarts, sweatshops, as well as places of worship and street life to see how everyone got along (or didn't) at different times. Some stops include: the Tweed Jail, St. Mary's Church, the founding site of the B'nai B'rith, the Jewish Daily Forward building, Mulberry street, the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue, the Henry Street Settlement House, Williamsburg Bridge and sites associated with Leon Trotsky, Abraham Cahan, Sun Yat Sen and Lillian Wald. Enjoy some pickles, dim sum and Italian cheeses along the way!
Rebecca Kobrin is the Russell and Bettina Knapp Associate Professor of American Jewish History, working in the fields of immigration history, American religion, urban history and American Jewish History.
