About Arts In Education

Key to Morris Arts' mission of "building community through the arts" is integrating the arts as part of a complete education for students in northern New Jersey.

Through our Arts in Education programs we serve a diverse range of schools - connecting them to more than 200 assemblies, workshops, and customized artist in residence programs including visual arts, dance, music, poetry, theater, creative writing, storytelling, film-making, and environmental arts. These hands-on, immersive programs transcend the typical classroom encounter, open new doorways to enhanced learning and understanding, and provide thousands of New Jersey youth with inspirational experiences in the arts.

A large part of our educational programming includes our in-depth, signature residencies, in which teaching artists work extensively with a group of students, positively transforming their lives through access to a wide range of the creative arts. These highly interactive experiences, ranging from multicultural folk dance residencies to the study and performance of Shakespeare, to stained-glass designing workshops and the creation of school-wide murals, among many others, directly involve around 7,000 students a year and reach thousands more indirectly through creative exhibitions, performances, and presentations that are shared with entire school communities.

Arts-in-education programs cultivate curiosity, imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills; promote teamwork, problem-solving, and cross-cultural understanding; and enhance social and emotional intelligence (SEL). The result is students who are better able to tolerate ambiguity, explore new realms of possibility, express their own thoughts and feelings, and understand the perspectives of others. Furthermore, experiences in the arts can help produce globally aware, collaborative, and responsible citizens. Studies have also shown that students who participate in the arts have higher math and verbal SAT scores, better overall academic performance, and are less likely to drop out of high school.
