Description:

Sara Kathryn Arledge (1911-1998) was a prolific painter who was better known as an innovator of midcentury experimental cinema. Born in the Mojave Desert, she lived most of her life in Pasadena, CA, where she worked at the margins of the art establishment, creating a diverse and experimental body of work that operated in a space between painting and film. In Summer Night, bleeding lines of tropical pinks, blues, reds, and greens shape a distant landscape overlaid with animated, inky forms, evoking shadow-puppet theater or an asymmetrical Rorschach test. In 2019 the Armory mounted the survey exhibition, Sara Kathryn Arledge: Serene for the Moment.
