Artist bio:

George Shinn, 1930-2018. One of UCAL's founders, George lived together with his wife Phebe in their Spruce Hill house on 43rd Street since the early 60s. He attended what is now the University of the Arts but when his father died in 1951, he was forced to leave art school and began a career in business. Although he was employed by several local firms over the years, he never stopped painting. In 1987 his company closed & he found himself out of work. George reinvented himself-he turned to the crafts, started designing and painting floor cloths-painted canvas carpets, a historic American craft. George participated in craft shows in the East; his work was featured in several books & appeared in big, prestigious craft shows. He gave several lecture/demonstrations on the art of stenciling at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

After ten years in the craft world, George again changed his direction & became a full-time artist, painting big canvasses in acrylics. He joined two galleries in Philadelphia-High Wire & Muse-and appeared in both group and solo shows over the years. His work was reviewed favorably in local papers and he is represented in a number of private collections.
