Artist statement:

Paintings in this collection of still life works focus on objects with a history of mysticism and divination, so as to operate as an expression that all art performs as blank slates for human kind to project the subconscious upon. The pieces are created through a process known as Art-As-Therapy.

Artist bio:

Jo Gamel is an artist living in Philadelphia. Her process is heavily influenced by the practice of Art-as-Therapy, which she studied at the Master's level at Antioch University Seattle. She was raised in the Mid-Atlantic and North Eastern regions of the U.S., and has explored 38 of the U.S. states. She has lived as an ESL instructor in Sweden and Turkey, and traveled to over 26 countries, including award-funded trips to Finland and Russia, all of which has informed her anthropological interests in goddesses, religious architecture, feminism and theology. Her family's mixed spiritualties include Judaism, Polish Catholicism, English and Irish Episcopalianism, Celtic Wiccan, and Japanese Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Her work has been shown in galleries in Philadelphia, Seattle and Princeton. She is currently an active artist and designer, art education instructor, private tutor, ESL instructor, and sometimes an art gallery assistant. Now, she is writing a textbook on the chemistry and physics of oil paint in order to expand the community's understanding of the creation of archival paintings. She is currently curating an exhibition of all-womxn's paintings.
