Patrick Maguire
16x20
Oil on panel
Artist statement:
Patrick Maguire paints portals and planes, luring viewers to step into the vast landscapes of the subconscious. Through pulsations of repetitive mark-making, Maguire invites the viewer to get lost in a world that straddles between identifiable and illusive.
Maguire's work tends to become static enigmas. Formations of structured frameworks and scenery synthesize to mimic his present reality. Each painting has a flat build up of layers consisting of tick marks, which give physical and visual transparency. Previous layers pull to the surface to create the background for the next intersection. New planes and structures interact with the preceding pulsations to create either a tangible escape or confusion.
Much of Patrick's recent work is a coping mechanism while he has been fighting cancer, another uncertain immersive timeline where past and present commotions coincide with difficult realities of the unknown. What is left is the residual visual reverberations of a meditative process.
