50th Anniversary of the First Ascent of Denali's West Buttress Brad Washburn Print

The first six ascents of the South Peak of Denali and the three recorded ascents of the North Peak were all made by almost exactly the same route. For half a century the legend persisted that Denali was virtually impregnable from any other direction than the northeast.

The legend persisted until 1951. Washburn captured this gorgeous photo in celebration!

About Washburn: Washburn visited many wild regions of the globe - including the Alps, remote Alaska, the Grand Canyon, even Mount Everest. A typical method for Brad's photo trips was to remove an airplane door and to secure his camera and himself to the plane; exceptionally warm clothing was critical, especially in wintry conditions. He's also a storied mountaineer having put up many first ascents of major Alaskan peaks, often with his wife Barabara. His legacy lives on in the AAC's Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum and in his photos.
