For my Eagle Scout project, I created nine bookcases for St. Cyril of Alexandria catholic
k-8 school. These were replacements for their old bookshelves, which had fallen into disrepair.
In addition, they had more books than could fit on the shelves, so a replacement was necessary.
My project consisted of three phases. The first, was the construction of the shelves. I
worked with adult leaders in my troop to cut the wood necessary for our project. Then, with the
help of my fellow scouts, I constructed the book cases. This took place over the course of two
weeks.
The second phase was the painting phase. First we painted all of the shelves in a base
coat (your basic eggshell white paint). Next (after letting them dry of course), we painted them a
mid-blue color, as requested by the school (the previous bookshelves were of the same color).
The third part of the project (and the most complicated) was the installation of the
shelves. This was quite the extensive process. First, we had to remove the books from the old
shelves, followed by a lengthy removal process in which we had to unanchor the old shelves,
patch holes in the walls, and sweep out the area under them. After this, we moved in the new
shelves, arranged them in a formation in which they could all fit against the walls and anchored
them. Then, we had to rearrange the books and place them on the shelves, using the dewey
decimal system so it would be easy for the students at St. Cyrils to find them. This was
accomplished with the assistance of four adult leaders and ten of my fellow scouts from troop
115.
