0Illuminating Shadows: The Calotype in Nineteenth-century America by David Hanlon
At a time in the antebellum era when the American public began to see photography as represented by singular cased daguerreotype images, an undercurrent of experimentation was being undertaken in the country to cultivate an alternative process of making images from negatives. Known as the calotype, this method would initiate what would become the predominant technological approach for the medium that would last through the 20th century. This is the story of the early American practitioners of this process, along with the tales of their perseverance to enhance and promote an approach that they knew had greater long-term benefits, but that often clashed with the expectations of the age.
