Custom Chip Carving by Michael Quist

- fish species of your choice -

This is a custom piece of artwork featuring the fish species of your choice. The style of carving is known as "chip carving" and is among the oldest forms of wood carving. The designs are drawn by hand and chips of wood are removed with a single, small knife. Chip carving is common in northern Europe, particularly Scandinavia, but can be seen in cultures around the world.

The technique is simple in concept, but complex and time-consuming in practice; yes, it takes as long as you think! Although the art of chip carving is quite old, Mike developed the style of using a recessed silhouette as the platform for carving.

Dimensions:

Approximately 24" wide × 10" high depending on the species.

Wood:

This piece will be carved in linden and can be stained (or not) depending on your preferences.

This will close on Friday, March 5 at 4PM MST
Winner will be announced on Friday, March 5 at 4:30 PM MST through email/text

About the Artist:

Dr. Mike Quist is an Assistant Unit Leader-Fish with the Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and Professor in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences at the University of Idaho. He and his students conduct applied research focused on the management of sport fishes and conservation of native species. Dr. Quist started chip carving over 20 years ago to decompress from the stresses of graduate school. His carvings have since been widely recognized for their originality and quality, and can be found in private collections across North America. In addition to studying fish and chip carving, Dr. Quist also enjoy building fine furniture, creating all manner of things with his wife and two daughters (and catching giant steelhead).
