Born in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, Julio Valdez relocated to New York in1993. Working between pluri-cultural sensibilities, Valdez infuses his work with multi-layered imagery as a response to the shifting cultural and social influences in his life. A painter, printmaker and mixed media artist whose work has been exhibited internationally, he has received numerous prestigious international awards, including an Artist-in-Residence Fellowship at The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York City in1997-98, the Silver Palette for Painting at the XXXeme Festival International de la Peinture, Cagnes-sur-Mer, France in 1998, the Grand Prize at the XVII E. Leon Jimenes Biennial, the Dominican Republic in 2000, and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, 2003, among others. In 2019, Julio represented the Dominican Republic in the The 58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in Venice, Italy.
Julio is a longtime instructor at CCP and is well known for his silk aquatint technique as well as his expressive monotypes and works on paper. He is also runs Julio Valdez Project Space which brings a new dynamic to the burgeoning East Harlem art scene by offering established and emerging artists the opportunity to develop and present an installation or a new body of work to an audience of artists, collectors, curators and art enthusiasts. JVS Project Space is a regular exhibitor twice a year at the Affordable Art Fair, as well as Art on Paper fair, both in New York City. He splits his time between East Harlem, NY and Washington, DC.
