Building At-Home Gardens for Community Food Sovereignty
Now more than ever, we know that communities are stronger when everyone has access to nourishing food. Led by a partnership between the students and staff at the Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram's Garden, we're strengthening community food sovereignty in our Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood by providing low-cost, at-home garden beds for local residents who want to grow their own food. We've built more than 50 gardens so far in 2020--can you help us keep going?
Our student interns learn to use power tools to carefully construct each raised bed garden, then the gardens are installed for local neighbors following all COVID19 safety precautions. Each garden bed also comes with healthy soil, the new owner's favorite veggies and flowers, and plenty of gardening tips!
Each new garden bed costs us more than $250 in supplies and time, but they are available to neighbors starting at just $25. Your donation allows us to continue safely providing new gardens to everyone who wants to grow food at home.
