Artist: Steve Gross

Inspiration: The piece is a tribute to the greatest man that I have ever known, my dad. My dad was a world-renowned Calculus professor. However, he didn't teach Calculus. He taught students. My dad's passion came not from mathematics but from helping students learn mathematics. He believed in "confidence through competence", and used math as a vehicle for bolstering his students' self-esteem and enriching their lives.

Calculus is the study of infinitesimal change. Human beings are constantly changing. Most of the time, the minute-to-minute changes that occur in us are so small that they are virtually impossible to notice. However, over time, these unnoticeable changes accumulate and shape our lives in very noticeable ways. Every interaction we have with a person has the power to change their life. My dad - Professor Herbert I. Gross - believed that our purpose as human beings is to prioritize change in other peoples' lives for good. And in doing so, it is we who change the most.
