Mixed media, 16 x 19 in. This work combines the photographic process of cyanotype with traditional resist dyeing techniques-such as shibori and batik-and references the forms on cross-stitch samplers and ancient textiles. The cloth is prepared by stitching, binding, and applying wax to repel the photographic chemicals. After exposure to the sun and removal of the embroidered threads, the photographic process produces a trace of where the stitching had once been. Michael Milano is a widely exhibited artist living and working in Seattle. He earned his MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
