Meet a RMHC Champion Family
Six-year-old Paxton was born with methylmalonic academia, a metabolic disorder that prevents his body from breaking down protein. As a result of his condition, at the age of four, it was determined that he was in need of both a liver and kidney transplant. He was on the waiting list for nearly two years. Then on March 15, after 12 hours of surgery, Paxton was on the road to recovery.
"There were some complications initially after surgery, but now he is doing great," said his mom, Jordan.
Jordan stayed at Ronald McDonald House Pittsburgh while her son remained in the hospital. Having no vehicle with her because they had to fly from their home in Illinois, she was grateful that RMHC Pittsburgh and Morgantown was so close to the hospital.
"I don't have any idea what I would have done without the Ronald McDonald House," Jordan said. "It has not only helped me be near Paxton, but also with the cost of being away from home."
Throughout Paxton's recovery, there were times when he was been able to join his mom at the Ronald McDonald House. And when he was there, he loved to borrow the red wagon because that meant he and his mom were going for a walk. "He loves to go outside," said Jordan!
Nearly five months after his surgery, Paxton was strong enough to go home. And there, just like at the Ronald McDonald House, he enjoys his walks and loves to play with rocks.
Although families never know how long their medical journey will keep them away from home, they do know that because of RMHC Pittsburgh and Morgantown, the journey will never keep them away from each other!
