In Memory of Janet Devereaux.

Our basket is in memory of Janet Devereux who was diagnosed with uterine cancer. "Aunt" Janet maintained her dignity to the end of her illness, facing surgery and chemotherapy treatments bravely and without complaining. During the last moments at her apartment in Riverdale, NY she held my hand and calmly said to me, "I didn't know how fast this would take me."

All the items in this basket reflect our many wonderful memories of Janet. Janet was an amazing aunt who quietly touched the lives of her many nieces and nephews. She was calm, kind and never spoke disparagingly of anyone. During car rides home to Riverdale from family parties and events, Janet shared happy life moments and stories, including how:

  • As a native New Yorker, Janet had an avid interest in New York City's arts and culture. She was a life-long member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and appreciated and enjoyed a fine meal at a NYC restaurant, after a Metropolitan Opera event. One of her favorite restaurants was "Carmines"!
  • Janet was thoughtful and generous. She would carefully select Christmas gifts for each of her nieces and nephews from the Manhattan Barnes and Noble, before it became a nationwide chain and before internet shopping. Then she would carry the delightfully wrapped gifts in shopping bags on her journey-by bus-from Riverdale to Jersey City where we lived at the time.
  • She shared her love of books with us. We fondly remember the beautiful images and stories within the pages of The Illustrated Greek Myths and Legends, Tales From Shakespeare and Dr. Doolittle, among other classics that she introduced to us. And she would always talk about "her" favorite novels by Jane Austen that she would read while sipping tea under one of her many Tiffany style lamps.
  • Janet adored great performers and their music. Before he became popular, she listened to Andrea Bocelli and enjoyed his great voice and musicality. Janet invited some of her nieces and nephews to see him perform in Madison Square Garden. It was a show I will never forget.
  • Janet preferred taking the bus to subways, And, I can only imagine how many bus rides she took in her lifetime: to work, to the Met, to the Opera, and to visit her beloved family.

This basket will give you a chance to enjoy Cosmopolitan Manhattan the way Janet did!! Janet loved to share her experiences with her nieces and nephews and by bidding on her basket we hope you can do the same and pay tribute to a lady who is truly missed by many!!
