These paintings are from a shaman of the Cao Lan people in the northern Vietnam. They were painted on rice paper and dated to the late 19th to the early 20th century. Cao Lan paintings are very diverse. They are only used by shamans in religious ceremonies for a variety of purposes such as praying for good crops, funeral, wedding, initiation of a shaman, worshiping stars and etc. This example was painted for the Cao Lan shaman by a folk artist of the Kinh (Viet) people, based on Hang Trong Street in Hanoi. The story is a fascinating one and will be shared with the highest bidder. They are professionally framed.

Thank you to Bob Thaler of SDARL Class III and his wife Karen who purchased these when they lived in Vietnam.
