Best of Italy, 97, 98, 99, & 100-point gems

Eight bottle collection of Italy's greatest wines!

2 bottles 2015 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino

This understated Brunello delivers dried cherries, cumin, terracotta, rust and bark. The full-bodied palate presents an intricately detailed tapestry of finely interwoven tannins, interspersed with compressed, vibrant cherries and gilded in colorful, gleaming acidity. The finish is vivacious and polished and very long. Drink from 2024.

97 Points, James Suckling

2 bottles 2015 Tenuta dell' Ornellaia "Ornellaia"

(53% cabernet, 23% merlot, 17% cab franc, 7% petit verdot). The blackberry and blueberry aromas with fresh sage and bay-leaf character are impressive. Stone, graphite and mineral undertones. Full body and silky and refined tannins. Dusty. Elegance and polish. Shows greatness in strength and refinement. A dialed-in, dialed-back Ornellaia. Drink in 2022.

98 points, James Suckling

2 bottles 2016 Tenuta Sette Ponti "Oreno"

Gorgeous floral and deep, dark berry aromas with hints of spices such as cinnamon and hazelnuts. Full body and ultra-fine and strong tannins that are powerful yet so sleek and beautiful. Fantastic length and texture. Deep, dark and profound. Takes you on a long journey and shows you its true character. Better in 2025. Give it time.

99 points, James Suckling

2 bottles 2016 Antinori "Solaia"

Speechless here. I thought the 2015 was already perfect but this is perfect, too. But in a different way. It is so structured and multidimensional. Full-bodied, powerful and intense with incredible tannin backbone and depth. The dark-berry, wet-earth, oyster-shell and mushroom flavors are phenomenal. 20% less production than 2015. Give it four or five years to come together. Try after 2025.

100 points, James Suckling
