Jaimes Mayhew is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is collaborative, and based in his interests of land use, speculation and installed environments. Jaimes was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, and grew up outside of Denver. They come from a family of ecologists, geologists and draftsman, many of whom worked for mining companies, and spent most summers in the deserts and mountains of southern Utah, which has informed Jaimes' interest in land use, ecology, and energy production. Jaimes left Colorado at the age of 20 in search of a larger LGBT* community, and moved to Seattle. In Seattle, Jaimes came out as transgender, and made friends with communities of queer punks that taught them about dumpster diving, chosen family and queer pride. These few years equally influence Jaimes' work in land use, ecology and energy production as much as growing up in the vast landscapes of the southwest. Jaimes transferred to Emerson College in Boston, where they received a BA in Film in 2006, and simultaneously worked at an interactive art gallery in Cambridge (called Art Interactive) as the Archivist of Interactive Art, and collaborated with The Institute for Infinitely Small Things, a performance research art collective. After a brief stint in NYC, Jaimes moved to Baltimore, MD to pursue an MFA at University of Maryland Baltimore County in Intermedia and Digital Art, and graduated in 2010. Since 2010, Jaimes has remained active in Baltimore's art community, serving as a board member for D:Center Baltimore from 2011-2014, Founding and running LABStudios artist residency in Station North Arts District from 2014-2018, and currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Institute of Contemporary Art Baltimore, among their many other collaborative endeavors supporting Baltimore's art community. Jaimes has received awards and grants from The Fulbright Commission, The Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund, The Contemporary Baltimore's Grit Fund, The Maryland State Arts Council, the Baltimore Museum of Art and Provisions Library.
Jaimes' collaborative and solo work has been shown at Eyebeam (New York City), Mass MoCa (Massachusetts), Conflux Festival (Brooklyn), The Chapel of St. Cecilia (Brooklyn, NY), This Is Not a Gateway (London), 808 Gallery (Boston), The Transmodern Festival (Baltimore, MD), Goucher College (Baltimore, MD), George Mason University (Fairfax, VA), Hoffmannsgallerí (Reykjavík, Iceland) among others
