Image Description: For the series Interwoven, Meyer addresses eSwatini's (formerly Swaziland) hyper-masculine culture by photographing men and its LGBT community. The artist created unique fabric headwraps, and hand-shredded each photographic print and the fabric from the wrap, weaving them together to create a three-dimensional work that both conceals and reveals the subject's identity. This artwork is a weaving of two pages taken from the press printing of the artist's book Interwoven and combines together the portraits of two subjects.
Photographer's Bio: Kyle Meyer is an American multidisciplinary visual artist. He was awarded the Mortimer B. Hayes Brandeis traveling fellowship in 2009, which led him to Southern Africa where he has been working on several long-term projects focusing on LGBT rights, HIV awareness, and ritualistic religious practices. He has taken his experiences in this culture and created, through sculpture, performance, and photography a diverse body of work on gender, sexuality, and life and death.
