May 29, 2011. Izmir, Turkey.

In Turkey, a 10 percent threshold is applied in elections, with Kurds entering elections as independent candidates in order to be eligible for deputies.

This photo was taken from the election car of Mehmet Tanhan, one of the Kurdish independent candidates for parliament. Mehmet Tanhan ended up losing the election by a slight margin of difference. Recently, Mehmet Tanhan was sentenced to 9 years in prison, representative of hundreds of Kurdish politicians in Turkey.
