Image Description:

This image is from the project Unruly: women's identity and their hair.

Marielisa is a mystical woman; she directs family constellations with horses. These emotional therapies, full of energy, help people find a solution for their problems through their contact with horses. She considers her long hair to be similar to a horse's tail, and in this way, Marielisa feels that she is part of them. Her hair gives her confidence; it's the part of her body with which she feels the most comfortable and connected.

Photographer's Bio:

Ana María Buitrón is a freelance photojournalist born in Quito, Ecuador.

Her work uses photography to witness social issues and encourage people -silenced by countless reasons- to raise their voices. She delves into the search of identity, gender issues and environment.

She also uses photography to let young people in low income and underdeveloped areas of Ecuador tell their deepest stories through audiovisual workshops.

Ana María studied journalism and communications at the Catholic University of Ecuador in Quito. She later completed a master's degree in Audiovisual Communication from UCA in Buenos Aires. She has also taken numerous photography courses, including in the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art, SICA in Buenos Aires, Foundry Workshops in Guatemala and Bali and at the International Center of Photography in New York City.

As a freelance photographer, she is currently working primarily with NGO's like Save the Children International, United Nations, Conservation International and private and public institutions.

In 2014, Ana María launched @EverydayEcuador, an Instagram blogging and community page featuring Ecuadorian documentary photography of everyday life through the vision of professional and amateur photographers. With over 48k followers, the images presented on @EverydayEcuador have also been exhibited on numerous occasions worldwide.
