Title: Jumbo Jack's Comeback

Artist: Tammy Burks

Medium: Oil

Dimensions: 18" x 24.5"

Animals depicted: Jumbo Jack

This gentle soul came to us last summer after being brutally shot in the face. The wound was left untreated and festered for weeks with infection. But we knew as soon as we met him that this dog wanted to live. So instead of taking the easy way out, we opted to send him to a specialist for emergency surgery where they removed half of his lower jaw, causing him to lose his ability to swallow. He ate through a tube several times a day for months. The pain he endured out in this heat drops us to our knees. And yet, he wagged his tail and pushed his head against our chests and just wanted to feel a comforting touch. Although he was a real trooper, we knew how badly he wanted to eat and it was affecting his quality of life. His foster mom worked with him all day everyday (with the guidance of his surgical team) and the joyous day finally arrived that Jumbo Jack could eat and drink on his own! His foster mom brought him to Stray Rescue so the staff who tube-fed him in the beginning could all be a part of his first cheeseburger! Not long after, Jumbo Jack found his forever family and is now named Phoenix. He's now the most spoiled dog and enjoys lounging on the couch with his mom and dad, going for walks and hand-fed meals. We knew he was a warrior!
