For a couple of years now, this house has been a feeding station for some feral cats. I've done TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) on them, so no new babies will be born. And I've even rescued a few pregnant cats that ended up warming up to indoor life and now live happy with loving families.
But this day, when I stopped to feed, I found a stray dog laying on a mattress in the back room. She got up when she saw me but didn't run off. She had an injured back leg, and it looked like it might even be broken. She also looked like she had recently had puppies. I went back out to the jeep to get some Vienna sausages, but I don't think I was even going to end up needing them! When I turned around, she had come out to the front porch and was just waiting for me. It was cold, so I put her in the jeep. I started searching every inch of this house for puppies. Nothing. There were a couple other abandoned houses in the area though, so before I left, I searched them all. There was no sign of any puppies anywhere. I even took mom back out of the jeep and hoped that she would lead me to them. But instead, she stood by my feet, looking up at me. It seemed like she was wondering why I took her out of the warm place and back out into the cold? I ended up taking her to the shelter and getting her settled in. I made another trip over and looked again, just in case I missed the puppies or by this time, might even hear them crying. Still nothing. Sadly, she was probably dumped because she was no longer needed.
