The Chapel at Western Reserve Academy
Framed Wood Block Print, # 9/75
12.5" x 22.5"
Edward Dixon McDonald, AIA, an Architect and Architectural & Industrial Illustrator, worked and raised his family in Shaker Heights during the first half of the 20th century.
After graduating in 1913 from The University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architecture, he worked for the prestigious Cleveland firm, Walker and Weeks.
He supplemented this design work by producing watercolors and block print images of Cleveland's Industrial heyday. Many of his works graced the cover of manufacturing periodicals such as METAL PROGRESS.
The image selected here is from a long series of block prints of Ohio and Northeastern colleges and universities which he made during the Depression when architectural work was limited.
This print of the Chapel at Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, Ohio, circa late 1930's, is part of the series that includes the Flora Stone Mather College, Laurel School, Oberlin College, and Cornell University.
