This contemplative painting by Gregory Martin is a meditation on American Pharoah, as a foal looking toward his storied future and as a Derby winner looking back at his younger self. The color pallet is a range of quiet blues and grays.

American Pharoah (foaled February 2, 2012) is a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the American Triple Crown and the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2015. He was the 12th Triple Crown winner in history, and in winning all four races, became the first horse to win the Grand Slam of Thoroughbred racing.

Gregory Martin was born in 1974 in Louisville. After spending time at several art schools, he attended the Pratt Institute and received his MFA in 2008. A skilled visual artist and entrepreneur, Martin still lives and works in Kentucky. His work is both observation and reaction to the world around us.
