0American Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)
This shrub usually reaches 10' to 15', is easy to grow, and has fragrant, yellow flowers in the fall when its leaves turn a brilliant gold. Witch hazel was a major medicinal plant for Native Americans and is still commercially used today. Witch hazel oil has a long history in medicines, eye-washes, aftershave lotions, and salves for soothing insect bites, burns, and poison ivy rashes. Native Americans and early settlers relied on their forked branches as a way to find underground sources of water. Witch hazel is a popular food source for insects and butterflies and is a nesting site for several bird species. Turkey, grouse, and squirrel feed on its seeds.
