Labrador Tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum)

Labrador Tea is a low evergreen shrub that usually grows near bogs. It produces clusters of small, white flowers in late spring. The leaves were used by Native Americans to make a fragrant tea. During the Revolutionary War, it was used by colonists as a substitute for English teas. The common name of this species reflects both its abundance in Labrador and its long use as an herbal tea. The name "groenlandicum" is a reference to Greenland, where the plant is also common. In 1918, Labrador Tea was reported to be growing wild just north of Dover in the area around Mount Hope.
