0Red Lobelia (Lobelia cardinalis)
Red Lobelia or Cardinal Flower is one of the most attractive native plants in New Jersey. The showy, scarlet-red flowers bloom from July through September, offering a late summer nectar source that attracts many hummingbirds. Flowers begin opening at the bottom of a flower spike and continue to the top. Considered deer resistant, Red Lobelia prefers partly shady areas but can tolerate full shade. The flower color is similar to the red robes worn by Roman Catholic cardinals, hence the name. Widely used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes including the treatment of stomach ailments, fever, and typhoid.
