Dick Gilman, one of this year's honorees, has been hand crafting instruments for decades. All of his instruments are handmade from scratch entirely by Dick.
In his fretless banjo and dulcimer he uses walnut, cherry, and curly maple. Each instrument is unique due to its specific wood.
His dulcimers are strung with steel strings and use geared tuners and are patterned after the Huntington style of W. Va. The fret scale is 27 inches.
His banjos are fretless, similar to those made by Frank Proffitt from North Carolina. Dick uses nylon strings (or a similar synthetic), the tuners are violin pegs, and he makes the head from fiberskyn3 (which is easily replaced if damaged).
Dick finishes both instruments with hand-rubbed oil.
Dick has a variety of each instrument on hand, so the winner may contact him to choose the one liked best.
