Embark on a private tour of Great Camp Santanoni led by Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) Exec. Dir. Steven Engelhart, who has been closely involved with the preservation of the camp complex for almost 30 yrs.
Camp Santanoni is an extensive estate covering nearly 13,000 acres. Construction started in 1892. At its heyday, the property included nearly 48 buildings, a 200-acre farm & a Japanese-inspired log villa. In 1972, Santanoni was acquired by NY State & became part of the Forest Preserve. For over 25 yrs, AARCH has led the effort to protect, interpret, & share this treasure. Journey back in time on an in-depth tour of this National Historic Landmark.
Visit its stellar Gate Lodge & farm before arriving at the main camp, masterfully perched on Newcomb Lake. Eat your picnic lunch under the same eaves that sheltered Theodore Roosevelt. Walk into the camp's buildings to appreciate past & present workmanship, hear about families & celebrity guests who summered here. See first-hand efforts to conserve this Park jewel.
