"Jib Full of Memories/ Island Blossom" is about the very early morning light as it comes across the Miles River and strikes on the log canoes at Log Canoe Harbor. I have been fortunate to enjoy the North family's friendship for over 29 years now. In fact, many people and institutions such as CBMM and the Concours d'Elegance of St. Michaels have enjoyed and benefited from the many years of Judge North and his family's generosity and vision. I get to stay at Log Canoe Harbor overnight during the last weekend of racing. This gives me a Sunday morning to rise early before guests wake up and crews start to arrive. Best of all I get to watch the sun come up across the river and gradually reveal the family's fleet of canoes cross-tied at the dock. The changes in angles of light and colors that play in the sails and on the hulls have been a favorite subject of mine for many years. It is never the same. The manner in which the sails seem to fold in the light has fascinated me for all the years I have raced sailboats. For this image, I laid on the dew-soaked dock to get the right angles of this interplay of light and shapes. As Robert Capa once said, "If you aren't getting the shots you aren't close enough".
