The iconic wines of Ridge Vineyards! With a story that dates back to 1892, Ridge produces some of California's greatest wines, their Ridge Monte Bello being the most famous. But their real gift to the world is their mastery of Zinfandel.
All of these wines are terrific, somehow maintaining elegance and grace while being powerful. Zin can be wild in the vineyard and Ridge has turned a tiger into a pussycat.
This is but a smattering of the Ridge wines produced, and it is a great sampler. The Three Valleys is Zin blended with other varietals, something Ridge was doing before it was cool (The Prisoner ring a bell?). The Petite Sirah, if you can believe it, is BIGGER than a big Cabernet Sauvignon and the pair of Dusi Ranch Zins from different vintages give you a chance to see what the weather does to the grapes. After all, wine is agriculture.
2017 Ridge Three Valleys Sonoma County
Clay, minerals, and fresh mint. Sweet red berry fruit entry, medium body, lively acid, and supple tannins. Long, elegant finish. 73% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignane, 2% Grenache
2017 Ridge Lytton Estate Petite Sirah
Deep dark purplish-black color, peppery, floral aromas. Full-bodied with rich layered plum and fig fruit on the palate. Well coated tannins and a long minerally finish. An adjacent block of Zinfandel was included to soften tannins. This full-bodied petite Sirah will be enjoyable over the next fifteen years.
2017 Ridge Paso Robles Benito Dusi Ranch
Deep garnet color. Black cherry and plum fruit aromas, pepper spice, and toasted oak. Ripe cherry fruit entry, medium-full bodied, rich tannins, with lively acidity. Long spicy finish. Enjoyable now, this delicious wine will develop fully over the next six years.
2018 Ridge Paso Robles Benito Dusi Ranch
Dark garnet-red color. Aromas of ripe plum and cherry fruits, sweet oak, and complex gravel earth. Enters with sweet bramble fruit, rich tannins, toasted oak, and complex minerality. Refreshing acidity supports a long finish. Fifteen months in oak has added exotic spice and integrated tannins with its appealing fruit. It will be most enjoyable over the next seven years.
