Photo of 3 birds on front. 257 pp, 5.25 X 8", The book provides descriptions of families of birds, where they live, and what they eat. It discusses the significance of birds to agriculture and mankind. There are 48 illustrations in color, but mostly text. Ideal for a vintage bird book collector.
The author, Neltje Blanchan De Graff Doubleday was a United States scientific historian and nature writer who published several books on wildflowers and birds. Her work is known for its synthesis of scientific interest with poetic phrasing. She was married to the publisher, Frank Nelson Doubleday. She participated in philanthropic work and died in while on special assignment as a commissioner for the Red Cross in Canton, China.
