About the Item

Jim Masterson developed this piece after taking Taro Asano's Master Class held at the Metal Museum in February 2020. The cleaver features wrought iron from the First United Methodist Church in downtown Memphis, which burned down in 2006. Embedded within the wrought iron using a fire welding technique is 1095 steel, providing a sharp cutting edge.

About the Artist

Artist Jim Masterson recently celebrated 20 years at the Metal Museum. He currently serves as the Shop Foreman, as well as the lead designer, estimator, and fabricator, in the Metalworking Facilities. Masterson received his MFA in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing from Miami University (Oxford, OH) and his BFA in Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville, IL). When he's not in the Shop, you can find him spoiling the Museum's resident cats or teaching a workshop at a one of many craft schools across the county.
