0This year, because of the need to socially distance, we will not be able to sit down in our Parish Hall and enjoy a delicious Bazaar luncheon together. Instead, we are preparing Shoebox Lunches.
What are Shoebox Lunches? During the Jim Crow era, when African Americans were refused service in white-owned restaurants, shoeboxes were used to store the prepared lunches needed for long trips by Black families. Our luncheon this year is served in recognition of those days of segregation, which were not so very long ago. We are joining with Faith Tabernacle of Praise here in Beaufort to provide these lunches and share in their proceeds.
In these days of division and dissent, breaking bread together is at the core of Christian identity. Jesus broke bread at the table with his friends and said, "Do this in remembrance of me."
Reflecting with our African American brothers and sisters, we chose family recipes that were special, and our menu includes: a pimento cheese sandwich, potato salad, fried chicken, deviled eggs, and a slice of sweet potato pie.
The lunches will be delivered curbside in front of St. Paul's Parish Hall on Saturday, November 14th, as part of the general Bazaar merchandise pick up. Pick up of lunch, and all purchased items, will be by the first letter of your last name as follows: A - F, 10:30 - 11:30 / G - 0, 11:30 - 12:30 / P - Z, 12:30 - 1:30.
